Book Interior Design & Formatting

Typography, spacing, and structure designed for readability and reliable print.
I design and format book interiors for indie authors who want their books to read cleanly, print reliably, and feel intentional rather than templated.
My focus is on typography, spacing, and structure, the elements that quietly shape how a book is experienced, even when they go unnoticed.

Examples of interior pages designed for balance, rhythm, and long-form readability.

An interior designed around the book...not the template

Every book places different demands on its interior. Trim size, genre, pacing, and publishing platform all influence how a layout should behave. Interior design is not a single export, it’s a series of decisions made to support reading across formats.I consider:
Typographic hierarchy and consistency
Trim-size–specific margins and spacing
Chapter rhythm and scene breaks
Platform-ready preparation for print and ebook
Pre-proof checks to prevent layout issues later

Book Interior & Formatting FAQs

Can I format my own book?
Many authors do. Formatting tools are accessible and for simple projects they can be enough. A lot of the authors I work with come after encountering spacing issues, print inconsistencies or layout problems that only appear at proof stage.

What’s the difference between print and ebook formatting?
Print and ebook interiors behave differently. Print relies on fixed layouts, margins, and page flow, while ebooks are flowable and must adapt to different devices and reader settings. Each format requires its own considerations.

What’s the difference between templates and typographic formatting?
Templates are designed to work broadly. Typographic formatting is designed around a specific book its trim size, genre, pacing, and structure, resulting in a more considered reading experience.

Why does spacing matter so much?
Spacing affects rhythm, comfort, and readability. Too tight feels rushed, too loose feels unbalanced. Consistent spacing is one of the clearest markers of professional interior design.

Will I still have control over my book?
Yes. I guide structure and typography while respecting your content and preferences. Decisions are made with the book’s needs in mind, not to impose a preset style.

Why hire a formatter instead of doing it myself?
Formatting software can produce files. A formatter brings judgment, experience, and an external eye, especially useful when issues aren’t visible until it’s too late to fix them easily.

Meet the Designer

I’m a designer, reader, and long-time member of the indie book community, with a practice rooted in interiors-first book design. My work is driven by how a book feels to read. The rhythm of pages, the space around words, and the quiet design choices that support a story without competing with it.Like many readers, my relationship with books has evolved over time. While my tastes and formats have changed, my appreciation for thoughtful design has not. Physical books still hold a special place for me, particularly special editions, where typography, materials, and structure come together in a way that feels deliberate and lasting. With over ten years of experience in photography and design, I bring a trained eye and a considered approach to every project. Whether working on interior formatting, covers, or supporting visuals, my goal is always the same. To translate an author’s vision into design choices that feel aligned, readable, and intentional. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, representing queer stories and creators remains an important part of my values and my work.I work directly with authors on select projects, focusing on clarity, collaboration, and design integrity. I support books that are built with care and meant to be experienced, not just consumed. For a closer look at how I approach book interiors and formatting, you can read more here.

No. I work on a limited number of projects at a time to ensure each author receives focused, considered design support. I take on projects that align with my style, approach and availability.

Do you work with book boxes and special edition collaborations?
Yes. I regularly work with book boxes and curated book-based brands on interior design, special editions, edges, typography and supporting visuals. These projects often involve tight timelines, coordinated releases, and collaboration with multiple stakeholders, which I’m comfortable navigating.
Book box enquiries are welcome and should be submitted via the contact form with as much detail as possible, including timelines and scope.

BOOK FORMATTING & INTERIOR DESIGN

What types of books do you format?
I primarily work with indie authors across romance and adjacent genres. My focus is on readability, pacing, and intentional layout for both digital and print formats.

Do you offer ebook and print formatting?
Yes. Formatting packages may include ebook, paperback, and hardcover depending on the service selected. Details are listed on the Design Services page.

Can you match another designer’s style or an existing interior?
No. All interiors are designed within my own visual language and approach. I do not replicate the styles of other designers.

COVERS & OTHER DESIGN WORK

Do you work with NSFW or taboo content?
Yes. I’m comfortable working with NSFW, dark romance and taboo themes where appropriate. My focus remains on thoughtful, intentional design that supports the work and its audience.
If you’re unsure whether your project is a good fit, you’re welcome to include details in your enquiry so it can be assessed appropriately.

Do you offer custom cover design?
Yes, but cover projects are taken on selectively. My cover work follows a defined design style and may not be suitable for every project.

Availability is limited, and booking well in advance is recommended.

Do you offer revisions?
Yes. Revision allowances depend on the service selected and are outlined at the start of each project.

GENERAL

Do you use AI in your design work?
No. All design work is created manually using professional design tools and original layouts. I do not use AI-generated artwork or AI-assisted design in client projects.
This ensures consistency, originality and a considered approach tailored to each book.

Do you offer refunds?
Due to the custom nature of design work, refunds are not offered once a project has commenced.

Can you guarantee sales or rankings?
No. Design supports a book’s presentation and readability, but sales and performance depend on many factors outside my control.

Testimonials

I have absolutely LOVED working with Lauri [Dysfunktion Aesthetics]! Not only has she made countless pretties for my books over the years, but just recently she did this fantastic custom audiobook cover for me and it FULLY SLAPS! Lauri is professional, talented, and sweet as all get out. 10/10 recommend 😄 ~ Nyla K

I love working with Lauri. Her graphics are great and the special edition cover she designed for Like You Hate Me is to die for. I gave her free rein to do whatever she wanted with it and it turned out even better than I knew it would. If you’re looking for a designer who hits the vibe every damn time, Lauri is your girl.
~ Bethany Winters

I went to Lauri with “vibes”, and she—by some magic—turned those vibes into the most gorgeous special edition covers I’ve ever seen. I wanted grungy, gritty, edgy, and sensual. WOW, did she ever deliver! I’m convinced she can create anything. In addition to her brilliant creativity, she’s easy to work with, and you’ll have an absolute blast. This was my first experience printing books in bulk and adding all the fun bougie elements (like foiling and sprayed edges). Lauri was patient and helpful at every step. She took great care with the design, ensuring it was the correct size and that all the extra elements were in order. For something elevated that’s truly stand-out and special, Lauri’s your go-to designer.
~ S. Legend

I loved working with Lauri, she listened to what design elements I wanted and put together a brand package better than what I saw in my head. It felt so easy to talk to Lauri and she worked quickly and replied to me daily and kept me involved with what she was doing. 10/10 would recommend.
~Datura Daze

Lauri is always my go to when I need help with graphics. She’s super easy to talk to and understands the importance of hitting the right vibe for the book you’re trying to promote, and her work turns out beautiful every time.
~ Erin Russell

Lauri is the absolute best! I sent her a very amateur concept idea for the cover I was wanting, and she weaved her artistic magic and designed the most stunning cover for my anniversary edition. If you want a designer that understands your vision and brings your ideas to life, I highly recommend Lauri from Dysfunktion Aesthetics. But my most absolute favorite part of this whole new partnership is that she lives not far from me and I get to see her in person.
~ Melinda Terranova

Working with Lauri from Dysfunktion Aesthetics was a dream. She took my minor notes and created stunning graphics that fit the vibe perfectly! You can trust her to take your words and make them pop on a well-crafted image!
~ Isabel Lucero

Working with Lauri from Dysfunktion Aesthetics has been an absolute game-changer. She didn’t just bring my vision to life—she elevated it beyond what I ever imagined. Her attention to detail, creativity, and ability to capture the perfect vibe are truly unmatched. If you’re searching for a designer who delivers excellence, look no further—Lauri is the one. She’s a powerhouse of talent, and her work speaks for itself.
~ Adeline Franklin
